Local Entrepreneur Makes $1 Million Gift
to Shawnee Mission Medical Center
The Shawnee Mission Medical Center¡¯s new Birth Center Atrium will be named
¡°The Benny & Edith Lee Atrium¡±




MERRIAM, Kan. ¨C Benny and Edith Lee have made a $1 million gift to The Foundation for Shawnee Mission Medical Center to name the Atrium of the new Shawnee Mission Birth Center. Currently under construction, the Birth Center will open in March 2013 and provide care for 5,000 newborns and their mothers each year.

¡°Shawnee Mission Medical Center is grateful to Benny and Edith Lee for their investment in the care of our community¡¯s newest members,¡± said Ken Bacon, hospital President and CEO. ¡°Their dedication to provide the highest quality services for our babies, as well as their mothers and families, will touch thousands of lives each year.¡±

Benny Lee is Chairman & CEO of DuraComm Corporation, a leading manufacturer and distributor of AC-to-DC switching power supplies, LED and induction lighting solutions, solar power, and other green power and energy conservation products. Born and raised in Taiwan, Lee graduated from the Tatung Institute of Technology with a major in electrical engineering.

Lee¡¯s companies have received many accolades, including Top 10 Small Business of the Year by the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce in 2003. Affirming his belief that the United States is the most philanthropic country in the world, Benny lives the practice of giving back to the community and provides leadership to many civic and philanthropic organizations.

¡°The level of generosity and giving back in America is amazing,¡± Lee said. ¡°That¡¯s how I learned about philanthropy and began to feel that I wanted to give back, too.¡±

¡°With Benny and Edith Lee¡¯s generous commitment, The Foundation for Shawnee Mission Medical Center has raised more than $29.5 million toward completion of our $30 million capital campaign, A Mission of Healing,¡± said Lou Gehring, Senior Executive Director of the Foundation. ¡°We are honored by their generosity toward the Medical Center¡¯s mission of serving the families of our great community.¡±

About the Shawnee Mission Birth Center

The new Shawnee Mission Birth Center will open in late February 2013 and include 26 labor and delivery rooms and 43 private postpartum rooms ¨C accommodating up to 5,000 births annually. In addition, the Center¡¯s 24-bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) will be among the first in the area to offer private, single-family rooms for mothers and their babies, allowing space to safely care for 28-30 babies at a time. Other highlights of the Birth Center include three Cesarean-section suites that guarantee immediate delivery for mothers and babies in crisis; support areas where families can eat, gather and relax; and floor-to-ceiling windows and natural elements that create a soothing, healing environment.
