FBWC Chinese New Year Celebration

Families Blessed with the World's Children (FBWC) celebrated the upcoming Chinese New Year, the year of the dragon, on Sat. Jan 14th. Over 200 persons were in attendance; including over 75 children, the majority adopted from China.

The evening's festivities included a calligraphy demonstration by Joyce Chang (Chinese School of Greater Kansas City) and her sister. The children and their families learned about Chun Lian and were allowed to take home couplets and the Fu symbol to decorate their homes for the new year. George Peng of the school also demonstrated his skill with the Chinese yo yo to the delight of the entire crowd.

Music for the evening was provided by the Kansas City Chinese Music Ensemble and all who attended enjoyed the music. The children showed their delight by dancing together on the dance floor.

The Kansas City Drum Rollers rang in the New Year with both lion and dragon dances. The children were allowed to parade with the dragon and beat the drums much to their delight. The entire crowd woke up the dragon and chased away bad luck and evil spirits by jumping on bubble wrap to simulate the sound of firecrackers.

FBWC's newly formed Children's Chinese Choir was also a favorite as they performed Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Xin Nin Hao Ya, and Gong Xi.. They were accompanied by Liu Runjie and David Qi. KCCA member Lin Zhe and her family have donated their time and expertise in helping start the children's choir. Liu Runjie also performed a piano solo, Liang Zhu.

Other highlights of the evening included meeting and being photographed with a "Chinese Princess" (Hu Xiaowei), a catered dinner by Master Wok, children's crafts, face painting (dragons, pandas, opera masks, and more) by Katey-did Face Painting, and two delicious and beautiful dragon cakes. Red envelopes with candy and prize winning tickets were also a favorite of the children.

FBWC was started in 1994 by Kansas City area families who had recently adopted children from China. FBWC currently has over 200 individuals on their email list and has 45+ dues paying member families. FBWC offers cultural, education, supportive, and social events for members throughout the year.
