BVN swims away with EKL boys title

Led by double individual winners Sihan Liu and Nathan Hoisington, Blue Valley North won the East Kansas League boys swimming meet Saturday at Blue Valley West.

The Mustangs won with 365 points, with the host Jaguars second at 321.5. The second-place finish for BV West is its best ever at league. Blue Valley Northwest was a distant third at 246.

The Mustangs captured five of the eight individual swimming events and all three relays. Liu, a sophomore, claimed the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.35) and 100-yard butterfly (54.14) gold medals. He had little time to recover after swimming the butterfly leg in the 200-yard medley relay, which was the event before the 200 free.

The sophomore trailed most of the race before taking the lead in the last 25 yards.

“I was really tired before the race,” he said. “I was dying, but I couldn’t let him beat me,” Liu said.

“He stepped his training year-round,” the Mustangs’ fifth-year coach Derek Berg said. “He has grown some, but he is stronger and more muscular this season.”

Hoisington, a senior who is the two-time state champion in the 200-yard individual medley, easily captured the IM in 1:55.95 and won the 100-yard backstroke in 53.78.

“I swam the breast (stroke) at state the last two years, but we have experimented with the back (stroke) and I have gotten some good times,” Hoisington said. “I out-touched the defending champion Ben Scheffer (of Olathe East) earlier in January.”

BV North junior Griffin Peavey, the defending state champion in the 100 breaststroke, won the event Saturday in 59.23 and placed second to Hoisington in the 200 IM.

“I’d like to win at state,” he said. “It will come down to how much I want it. Whoever wants it the most will win it. I love the competition.”

The Mustangs’ EKL title comes one year after they struggled in the prelims and lost out to Blue Valley Northwest.

“We did not want to make that mistake this year,” Hoisington said. “We knew we had to swim our best on the first day.”

Next is the state meet Feb. 19-20 in Topeka — and for the first time there will be a 6A state title and a championship for 5A-1A.

“We are swimming faster than anytime since I’ve been here,” Berg said. “And this is the most I have qualified (16) for state.”
